What is Glucotrol? Glucotrol is the brand name of an orally ingested drug in a class of drugs called sulfonylureas. Glucotrol is also known under the name Glucotrol XL for an extended release product as well as the generic name Glipizide.
This drug metabolizes mostly in the liver and is a category C drug from a pregnancy perspective. This drug is for type 2 (non insulin dependant) diabetics. Glucotrol helps to regulate blood sugar levels. It’s dangerous to use Glucotrol or Glucotrol XL for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Also, although it can be bought from some sources without a valid prescription, it’s not advised by most doctors. Those with type 1 or type 2 Diabetes need to be under the care of a physician. This drug is not for insulin dependant diabetics. If you have type 1 diabetes, you will need to use insulin instead and this drug will not help you.
There can be side effects of Glucotrol. Some side effects are only a mild nuisance. Glucotrol side effects might be worth enduring for the benefit the drug provides. Talk to your doctor about concerns and if side effects become too bothersome, your doctor may look for an alternative dosage or an alternative drug.
Because this drug has side effects and some risks, it’s important that your doctor be fully aware of your whole medical history to determine if this drug is an appropriate course of treatment. Many people with diabetes and Glucotrol can manage their condition effectively with the supervision of a doctor and proper following of dietary and exercise instructions.
Some people have few or no side effects from Glucotrol. Palpitations, constipation, skin sensitivity, light sensitivity and tremors sometimes occur. This drug can have adverse effects when mixed with other drugs. Always be cautious of taking more than one medication at the same time. This can apply to not only prescription drugs but over the counter medicines too. Also, vitamins and herbal supplements or even herbal teas can impact or be impacted by the addition of another medication.
This drug may not be right for you based on your history, other medications you use and/or other factors in your life. Talk to your doctor about any concerns. If using extended release tablets be sure to swallow them whole and not chew or crush them, otherwise it could result in an overdose of the drug.
